A New Year... and a muffin nazi...

My new year’s resolution: start blogging more! So, here it is, a new blog post (one of three per week), please check back frequently!
Along with more posting, we are adding new recipes to our rep here at the Brew. One of which is double chocolate chunk brownies. They are good – so very good. And then there is the brand new Rocky Road Cookie: marshmallows, chocolate chunks, and pecans packed into a wonderfully chocolate cookie. We also are making new cakes like a yummy chocolate spice cake and a coconut cake with creamy frosting! And I cannot forget our new savory item: bacon cheddar bisquits - for those of you who loved our bacon-cheddar scones - you will not be disappointed!
But maybe my favorite “newbie” at the Brew is the Banana Bran Muffin.  This is the result of endless harping by Jose about using bananas in, well, everything. Jess and I decided that muffins are a great way to go, and since it is the New Year and we are all trying to slim down… (most trying harder than me), we decided to go with a bran muffin. Now, before you write off our bakery status for serving “GASP” Low Fat Treats – come in and try one. I promise you it does not taste like sawdust – in fact; it is delicious AND low fat!!
But, you should know that this wonderful muffin nearly did not make it to the counter for two reasons: first, the baristas fell in love and continually came into buy them before they had a chance to sell. Secondly… the muffin nazi also known as David was, less than excited…
When I started baking a year ago at the Brew, one of the first things David wanted us to make was blueberry muffins. I love them, so no convincing was neccessary! But, I quickly learned that I was baking for the most incredibly picky muffin eater ever. The first batch was good – by my nearly impossible standards, but to David they were an amateur attempt… he decided the only way that I would be able to make them “correctly” was for him to show me. So, he did, and a streusel demonstration later (and many months), we were in business. Now, every so often, he comes into the kitchen to make sure we are doing them correctly… I feel like if I ever please the muffin nazi, I will have arrived!
But it was time to pitch the bran muffin idea; needless to say, I was nervous! I made them… I tasted them… I loved them… but I knew this was not enough. I took them to him, he tasted them, then he remarked that they were good, but they were hot and “they are always good hot”. So, I waited until it was cool and we went for round two. After making his “I am not going to like this because it is not a blueberry muffin face”, he tasted it and (drum roll please) HE LIKED IT! Success! One of our favorites around here, Carl, even called in and said it was "one of the best muffins he has ever had!"
So, as you start your new year, come and see us at the Brew and try one of our new treats and say ‘hello’ to our resident muffin nazi!
